Potential Return to MMA
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestler Matt Riddle has hinted at a possible return to mixed martial arts in 2024. At 37, Riddle is considering stepping back into the ring or cage after nearly a decade away from professional fighting. While he has been in discussions with various organizations, details of these talks remain under wraps.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has sparked speculation by mentioning potential offers on the table from bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL). However, no official statements have been made regarding which promotion Riddle might sign with.
A Look Back at Riddle's MMA Career
Riddle's last appearance in an MMA fight was in February 2014, where he emerged victorious against Michael Kuiper at Titan FC. This followed his departure from the UFC in 2013, which ended on a high note with a four-win streak, including a notable win over Che Mills. Despite this success, two of those victories were later overturned when Riddle tested positive for marijuana.
His exit from the UFC was not without controversy. Dana White, the president of the organization, openly criticized Riddle following his release. Yet, Riddle sees a silver lining in White's public remarks, attributing them to increasing his visibility and inadvertently helping to craft his "bro" persona that has since become synonymous with his wrestling character.
Transition to Professional Wrestling
After leaving MMA behind, Riddle transitioned to professional wrestling in 2014, training and making his debut in 2015. He quickly made a name for himself on the independent circuit, capturing several titles along the way. His prowess in the ring caught the attention of WWE, leading to his joining their NXT brand in 2018. There, he achieved success as one-half of the NXT Tag Team Champions alongside Pete Dunne.
In February 2021, Riddle's career reached new heights as he won the United States Championship on WWE's main roster. His partnership with veteran superstar Randy Orton, forming the team "RK-Bro," proved to be a winning combination as they secured the Raw Tag Team Championship twice.
Despite his achievements in professional wrestling, Riddle has maintained his combat skills, practicing martial arts multiple times a week and holding a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His ongoing dedication to combat sports was evident when he was spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando.
Riddle's Reflections and Future
In a conversation with MMA Junkie, Riddle expressed his openness to returning to combat sports, stating, "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions." He continued, "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."
Riddle also reflected on his past with the UFC and Dana White's criticism, noting that the experience helped him connect with fans who found his story relatable. He credits White's actions for helping him develop his wrestling character and gain a following in the wrestling world.
When discussing his potential return to MMA, Riddle appears to hold no grudges, indicating a pragmatic approach to his future in combat sports: "I never say never," he remarked. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge." He reminisced about his past victories and his seamless transition to pro wrestling, acknowledging both his love for wrestling and his lingering desire to compete in MMA.
Riddle concluded with a candid thought on his potential comeback: "I did good (and am) still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
Currently a free agent, Riddle's future in combat sports hangs in the balance, with fans eagerly anticipating his next move. Whether he returns to the world of MMA or continues to entertain in the squared circle, Riddle's competitive spirit and athletic prowess remain undeniable.
