The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a noteworthy trade, sending star forward Patrik Laine to the Montreal Canadiens. In return, the Blue Jackets acquired defenseman Jordan Harris and a 2026 second-round draft pick. The Trade Details
Patrik Laine’s journey with the Blue Jackets began just one game into the 2020-21 season. His tenure in Columbus, however, has been punctuated by both impressive performances and challenging periods. Laine was originally selected second overall in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets, quickly making a name for himself by netting 80 goals in his first two seasons.
Despite these early successes, Laine's time with the Blue Jackets wasn't without its difficulties. The 2022-23 season saw Laine sidelined by a concussion for nine games, followed by an additional three-game absence in December of the same season. Additionally, Laine entered the NHL/NHL Players' Association Player Assistance Program in late January, having recorded six goals and nine points in the 18 games prior.
Laine's offensive prowess was evident even amidst these challenges, as he posted consecutive 20-goal seasons in both 2021-22 and 2022-23. Yet, the Blue Jackets struggled overall, concluding the 2023-24 season with just 66 points, the lowest in the Eastern Conference and the fourth fewest in the NHL. General Manager Don Waddell explained the rationale behind the trade: "We want players that want to be Blue Jackets and Patrik made it clear that he thought a change of scenery was best for him."
Mutual Benefits for Both Teams
By trading Laine, whose contract carries an annual value of $8.7 million with two years remaining, Columbus gains valuable financial flexibility. "We were able to acquire a good young player in Jordan Harris while maintaining financial flexibility in this deal which was very important to us. We wish Patrik all the best," Waddell added.
For the Canadiens, acquiring a player of Laine's caliber provides a significant boost to their lineup. Montreal has missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, finishing with 68 points in the 2022-23 season and marginally improving to 76 points in 2023-24. With Laine’s goal-scoring abilities, the Canadiens aim to break this playoff drought and reinforce their competitiveness in the Eastern Conference.
