The Tennessee Titans are grappling with a tough start to their 2024 NFL season, having slid to 0-2 after a 24-17 loss to the New York Jets in Week 2. Leading the Titans' struggle is rookie quarterback Will Levis, whose performance has come under critical scrutiny after a costly turnover during the recent game.
Levis, known for his aggressive style, threw a risky pass to Tyjae Spears that led to a fumble. The Jets were quick to capitalize on this mistake, underlining the high stakes of every decision made on the gridiron. Offensive coordinator Callahan did not mince words during the postgame press conference, labeling the decision as "dumb."
Reflecting on the play, Levis conveyed understanding and shared responsibility. "He told us straight off, he's not a yeller and screamer, but he can be and there's certain situations that allow for that, and that definitely was one of those situations," Levis said. "I didn't bat an eye at it. I took the coaching."
These words are indicative of a player who not only acknowledges his mistakes but also shows a willingness to learn and adjust. "I was yelling at myself in my head the same way he was yelling at me," Levis revealed. "I know it's an emotional response that we all have after things like that. We were right back to it, and he had confidence in me on the next play taking that shot. That was cool to feel, coming back on the field after that turnover, even though we had another one after that. I don't have any problem with how he handled himself."
Thus far in the season, Levis has amassed three interceptions and two fumbles, reflecting a risk-taking approach that has both its merits and pitfalls. Analysts have pointed out that his tendency towards recklessness might have contributed to his fall to the 33rd overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Levis himself admitted, "I think a lot of people, when they hear gunslinger, they think about recklessness. I definitely feel like I was a little too reckless in my college career and tried to make some throws that I would want to take back. I changed that mentality a bit in my play last year. Just realizing at the level that I was playing at where I had to be that much more careful with the ball. I was proud of how I was able to protect it a little more than I did in my college years."
Despite these challenges, the Titans have set their sights on a playoff run this season, a goal that Levis echoed. "The goal for the 2024 Titans is to make a playoff run," Levis stated, setting a high bar for a team eager to prove themselves.
Looking forward, the Titans will face the Green Bay Packers this Sunday. In a twist of fate, the Packers will be without their starting quarterback Jordan Love, who is sidelined due to injury. Malik Willis will be stepping in, a change that might offer a different dynamic to the game.
This coming matchup represents a critical opportunity for Levis to demonstrate growth and lead his team to victory. His response to criticism and his reflective attitude suggest a maturity beyond his years. If he can translate these qualities onto the field, it might just be the turning point the Titans need to reverse their fortunes.
