Nevada’s victory over Fresno State in the 2019 football season was more than just a game; it marked a critical juncture for third-year head coach Jay Norvell and his prodigious find, wide receiver Tory Horton. Horton, a standout wide receiver known for his explosive plays, caught the attention of recruiters during his high school career. In a CIF-Central Section playoff game attended by Eric Scott, Horton showcased his potential with a singular, yet significant, catch for 54 yards. This performance prompted Nevada to extend him his first FBS program scholarship offer, a pivotal moment for Horton, who was then a three-star prospect on 247Sports since February 2019.
Horton was no stranger to competition, having been a part of the stellar 7-on-7 team, No Zone. This Fresno-based team boasted future Division I receivers such as Xavier Worthy, Jalen McMillan, Jeremiah Hunter, and Mac Dalena. Reflecting on the talent emerging from No Zone, Mike Ware, Horton’s 7-on-7 coach, stated, "We had all those receivers on No Zone, and now they're doing the same, if not better, at the next level."
Before receiving Nevada’s offer, Horton’s collegiate prospects were limited to Big Sky schools—Montana and Northern Colorado. His decision to join Nevada proved fruitful, not just for his career, but for the team’s dynamic on the field.
In 2022, the narrative took another interesting turn as Jay Norvell moved to Colorado State, taking Horton along, in a move that exemplified loyalty and strategic foresight. Horton's performance at Colorado State was nothing short of spectacular. During the 2022 season, he caught 71 passes for 1,131 yards and scored eight touchdowns, solidifying his reputation as a formidable wide receiver. Horton's success continued into the 2023 season, where he racked up 96 receptions for 1,136 yards and another eight touchdowns.
Despite opportunities to declare for the NFL Draft or transfer via the portal, Horton chose loyalty over ambition, deciding to return to Colorado State for one final season. "He's a loyal kid and comes from a loyal family," noted Chad Savage, a graduate assistant.
The final season at Colorado State held notable highlights for Horton, including a stunning 78-yard punt return for a touchdown and a team-high 65 yards receiving before an injury temporarily sidelined him. Nevertheless, Norvell was optimistic about his return, commenting, "Tory is sore but I think he's going to be available to play, so we'll see how he progresses over the week."
Horton’s contributions were acknowledged as he was named a two-time All-Mountain West first-team selection. His individual capacity to influence games was most evident when he achieved a career-high 16 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown in an overtime loss to Colorado.
