As a high school freshman, Haliburton faced an early career setback when he was essentially let go from the Playground Warriors AAU team in Oshkosh. Reflecting on the difficult moment, Haliburton recalls, "They never said that I was cut, but my parents told me that it was essentially like, 'He can come if he wants to.'" The departure led him to join Wisconsin United, a team based in Milwaukee.
The commitment to his new team wasn’t without its challenges. The drive from his home in Oshkosh to Milwaukee required a three-hour round trip, a testament to Haliburton’s dedication to his craft. Bryan Johnikin, the coach of Wisconsin United, played a crucial role in Haliburton’s development. During a practice session, Johnikin used his 3-year-old grandson as a defender to highlight Haliburton’s low release point. This unconventional coaching moment became a pivotal part of refining Haliburton's distinctive shooting style.
Haliburton’s unorthodox shot, characterized by a catapult-like motion that produces significant sidespin, starts with the ball in front of his chest. Despite its unique mechanics, Haliburton's shot has proven to be remarkably effective. "To the average fan, or anybody who plays, obviously it isn't textbook. But there's no denying how effective it is. It's straight cash, is the best way I can put it," noted Pacers guard TJ McConnell.
Haliburton has displayed consistent shooting prowess throughout his career. He has only shot below 40% from behind the arc once in six seasons between Iowa State and the NBA. The lone dip in his shooting percentage occurred last season when he rushed back from a hamstring injury. "I left in tears because I was so embarrassed of what was going on," Haliburton confessed about his early setbacks.
